Yasugibushi - Yasugibushi

Japanese:
Yasugibushi - Yasugibushi

A folk song from the Yasugi region of Shimane Prefecture. It has been sung as a drinking song in the region, and its origins lie in the "Sanko-bushi," a song that includes lyrics about geisha (geishas) called Sanko who lived in what is now Sakaiminato City, Tottori Prefecture during the Tenpo era (1830-44). It was then brought to Yasugi by sailors and became a parlor song for the entertainment world. However, as it was used as a backstage for Izumo-ken fist games, it gradually became longer and longer, and the lyrics, which are all about the port, "Izumo-maki-desha Sakai-no-minato..." were popular, and it came to be called "Izumo-bushi" after the opening line. When the lyrics "Yasugi Senken-na-de-tokoro..." were added to "Izumo-bushi," it was renamed "Yasugi-bushi." From the end of the Edo period to the Meiji period, Otsuka Junsen, an acupuncturist in Ido-cho, refined the rhythm of the Yasugi-bushi, and then Imaichiya Denrai, who runs a boiled food shop in Naka Market, refined the accompaniment and other improvements. Then, with the emergence of restaurant owners Watanabe Sakubei and his daughter Oito, the form we see today was completed. With the formation of the Authentic Yasugi-bushi Preservation Society in 1911 (Meiji 44) and Watanabe Oito's recording of a record in 1915 (Taisho 4), the dance spread throughout the country. The dance's "loach scooping" was originally "soil scooping," and is said to have been created in imitation of the movements of men working in iron sand selection workshops in Shimane Prefecture. Various events are held in Yasugi City, such as the Yasugi-bushi Competition and the Yasugi-bushi Iemoto Oito Festival, and the Yasugi-bushi Engeikan opened in 2006 (Heisei 18).
