Endophytic theory

This is a literary critique by Kitamura Tokoku. It was published in the literary society Bungakukai in May 1893 (Meiji 26). It is the culmination of a series of fundamental critiques of the Minyusha's utilitarian view of literature, beginning with his earlier essay, What does it mean to intervene in life? (February 1893), and is representative of Tokoku's literary critiques as a whole. In What does it mean to intervene in life?, Tokoku first criticized Yamaji Aizan, but here he begins his fundamental criticism of the enlightenment literary theory of Tokutomi Soho, the head of the Minyusha, who had been giving him various suggestions since his youth. Toruya's argument was that the stage of enlightenment is over, and that criticism must now be linked to drawing out the "inner life" of human beings at the site of creation and "solving" (interpreting) this, and this was the first theoretical clarification of the purpose of modern Japanese literature.

北村透谷(とうこく)の文芸評論。1893年（明治26）5月に、彼を中心とする同人誌『文学界』に発表したものだが、そのすこし前の論文『人生に相渉(あいわた)るとは何の謂(いい)ぞ』（1893.2）以来の、民友社的功利主義の文学観に対する一連の根本的批判の文章のうちのまさにピークをなす論文で、同時に透谷の文芸評論全体を代表する。『人生に相渉るとは何の謂ぞ』ではまず山路愛山(やまじあいざん)を批判したが、ここでは、透谷が青年時代以来種々の示唆を与えられてきた民友社の総帥徳富蘇峰(そほう)の啓蒙(けいもう)主義文学論に対する根本的な批判を始めている。もはや啓蒙の段階は終わったのだ、創造の現場で人間の「内部生命」を引き出してこれを「ソルブ（解釈）」することと結び付いての批評でなければならぬ、というのが透谷の主張で、それは日本近代文学の目的を初めて理論的に明らかにしたものでもあった。
