Marking method - Hyoushikiho (English spelling)

Japanese: 標識法 - ひょうしきほう（英語表記）marking method

A method of identifying individual animals by marking them for the study of their ecology and behavior. Identifying each individual animal is essential to studying the population and ecology of animals. In the case of large animals such as Japanese macaques, it is possible to identify them by their physical characteristics, but small, mobile animals such as insects, birds, and fish cannot be identified without some kind of mark. Insects are primarily marked by coloring, while fish, mammals, and insects such as beetles are marked by making wounds on parts of their bodies.

生態や行動の研究のために動物の個体に目印をつけて識別する方法。動物の個体数や生態を調べるためには，一匹一匹の個体を識別することが不可欠である。ニホンザルのような大型の動物の場合には，その肉体的特徴によって個体識別することができるが，小さい昆虫や鳥や魚のように動きまわるものは，なんらかの目印をつけなければ識別が不可能である。昆虫などでは主として彩色によって，魚や哺乳類あるいは昆虫の中でも甲虫類などでは体の一部に傷をつけて標識する。
