A city located on the eastern shore of Lake Biwa in central Shiga Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. The city developed from the castle town of Toyotomi Hidetsugu's Hachiman Castle. Even after the castle was abandoned, it flourished as a town of Omi merchants. As the center of the Koto Plain, it is served by the Tokaido Main Line and the Omi Railway, and produces Omi linen, mosquito nets, cotton canvas, tatami mats, roofing tiles, and medicines. The surrounding area is rich in rice. Chomei-ji Temple on the lakeside is the 31st temple on the Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage and offers excellent views of Lake Biwa. In 1993, Lake Biwa became a Ramsar site. In March 2010, it merged with Azuchi Town, Gamo District. Area: 177.45 km2 .
