Brazen Story - Kogansho

Japanese: 厚顔抄 - こうがんしょう

A commentary on the Kojiki and Nihon shoki songs. Three volumes. Written by Keichu at the command of Tokugawa Mitsukuni. Completed in 1691 ( 4th year of the Genroku era). The first and second volumes take up 127 poems from the Nihon shoki, and the second volume takes up 56 poems from the Kojiki, criticizing the old theories and presenting his own theories. The second volume in particular contains many original interpretations. It is a pioneer in this field, collecting many examples from sources including the Manyoshu and providing empirical and inductive interpretations.

記紀歌謡の注釈書。三巻。徳川光圀の命による契沖の著。元祿四年（一六九一）成立。上中二巻に日本書紀の歌一二七首、下巻に古事記の歌五六首をとりあげ、旧説を批判し、自説を述べたもの。特に下巻には独創的な解釈が多い。万葉集をはじめとする多くの例証を集め、実証的、帰納的な解釈を施してこの分野の先駆となる。
