In order for economic entities such as individuals and companies to obtain the necessary funds, they can first cover their current income or raise funds by disposing of assets they own, such as withdrawing deposits or selling stocks. When the source of funds is sought within the economic entity, it is called internal finance, or self-financing. In contrast, when the source of funds is sought from outside the economic entity, such as direct finance and indirect finance (see the section on direct finance and indirect finance), it is called external finance.
