A former town in Kuji County, located in north-central Ibaraki Prefecture, southwest of Hitachiota City. It was incorporated as a town in 1993. The town is long from north to south, with the Asakawa River and Yamada River flowing south. The town is mainly agricultural, with the southern part being a rice paddy area and the northern part being a producer of tobacco leaves (Suifuha), buckwheat, and vegetables, which supply the cities of Mito, Hitachinaka, Hitachi, and Hitachiota. Nishikanasa Shrine in the north of the town has been known to host a Shinto ritual called Dengaku since the Heian period. In December 2004, it was incorporated into Hitachiota City along with the villages of Suifu and Satomi in Kuji County. 61.64 km2 . Population: 11,709 (2003). 茨城県中北部,常陸太田市の南西隣にある久慈郡の旧町。1993年町制。南北に長い町域を浅川,山田川が南流する。農業を主とし,南部は水田地帯,北部の畑地は葉タバコ(水府葉),ソバ,野菜の産地で,水戸,ひたちなか,日立,常陸太田各市などへの供給地となっている。町北部の西金砂神社には平安時代からの神事〈田楽〉が伝えられている。2004年12月久慈郡水府村,里美村と常陸太田市へ編入。61.64km2。1万1709人(2003)。
