Amateur theatre - amateur theatre

Japanese:
Amateur theatre - amateur theatre
In contrast to professional theater, it generally refers to non-professional theater performed in workplaces, local communities, schools, etc. In the narrow sense, it refers to theater excluding student theater and school plays. Workplace theater was born from the proletarian theater movement in the 1920s and early 1930s, but it faded into obscurity due to oppression. After World War II, it flourished all at once with the rapid development of the labor movement, and was called "independent theater," producing such writers as Suzuki Masao and Miyamoto Ken, but was destroyed in the 1950 Red Purge by the occupying forces. Since the 1960s, local theater groups have been active beyond the workplace. National organizations for amateur theater include the Japan Amateur Theater Federation, the All-Japan Realism Theater Conference, and the National High School Theater Council, and the International Amateur Theater Festival is held in Toyama and Kanagawa prefectures.
