This is a basic technique for handicrafts, known as thread removal or openwork. It is an abbreviation of drawn thread work. By removing the warp threads of the base fabric to a desired width, the remaining weft threads are left behind, and then the weft threads are stitched with a different thread to create a lace-like shape. There are several ways to remove the threads, including the insertion method, in which the threads are removed in only one direction, either vertically or horizontally, and the Mexican, Italian, German, and Norwegian Hardanger work, in which the threads are removed in both vertical and horizontal directions to create a lattice pattern.
