A former town in Kumano County, on the northwestern edge of Kyoto Prefecture. Kumihama Bay (Lake Kumihama) is in the north, and the main settlements have developed along the bay shore, through which the Kitakinki Tango Railway runs. Pears, peaches, grapes and tulips are cultivated on the coastal sand dunes, and the textile industry is also thriving. Kumihama Bay is a lagoon with an area of about 7 km2 , where oysters are cultivated, and it is part of the San'in Kaigan National Park. Ancient Chinese coins and other items have been excavated from the Hakoishihama Relic Containment Site (historic site). In April 2004, it merged with Mineyama Town, Omiya Town, and Amino Town, Tango Town, and Yasaka Town in Naka County to form Kyotango City. Area: 145.05 km2 . Population: 12,023 (2003). 京都府北西端,熊野郡の旧町。北部に久美浜湾(久美浜湖)があり,湾岸に主集落が発達,北近畿タンゴ鉄道が通じる。海岸砂丘でナシ,モモ,ブドウやチューリップを栽培,機業も盛ん。久美浜湾は面積約7km2の潟湖(かたこ)で,カキの養殖が行われ,山陰海岸国立公園に属する。函石(はこいし)浜遺物包含地(史跡)は古代中国の貨幣などを出土。2004年4月中郡峰山町,大宮町,竹野郡網野町,丹後町,弥栄町と合併し,京丹後市となる。145.05km2。1万2023人(2003)。
