Date of birth and death unknown. French painter. Active in central France from 1480 to 1500. Named after his monumental masterpiece, the triptych for Moulins Cathedral (c. 1498), commissioned by the Duke of Bourbon. Attempts to identify this artist have suggested Jean Perréal and Jean Prévost, but in recent years the most popular theory has been that he was Jean Hey, a Dutchman who left his signature on "Ecce Homo" (Royal Museum of Fine Arts, Brussels), due to stylistic similarities. There are several works that are considered to be the work of this artist, but his early work "The Nativity of Cardinal Roland" (c. 1480, Autun, Musée Roland) shows clear influence from Hugo van der Goes, and the realistic depiction of details and icons show the tradition of Netherlandish painting. On the other hand, his clear composition and simplified expression of form are characteristic of his French style, which is similar to that of Jean Fouquet. He inherited the artistic style of Fouquet and was one of the most prominent painters in France in the second half of the 15th century.
