A type of percussion instrument, a Balinese knobbed gong. Similar gongs are found in other places, but this is the Balinese name. 10 to 14 gongs have small holes drilled in the sides, and two strings stretched over a wooden frame are passed through them, with the knobs facing up. They are lined up in a row, with the right side higher, to create a two-octave scale. A player strikes them with two long, thin sticks. The trompong was used as the lead melody instrument in the ceremonial gamelan gong gede and the gamelan Semal Pegrigan, which played court music, but is no longer used in newer types of gamelan.
