Gokurakuji is a Shingon Buddhist temple in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture. Its correct name is Ryōjusan Kannoin Gokuraku-Ritsu-ji. It was founded in 1259 (Shōgen 1) by Hojo Shigetoki, and is said to have been founded by Ninshō. In 1333 (Gankō 3/Shōkei 2), it became a temple at the request of Emperor Godaigo, and the temple flourished. Old drawings of Gokurakuji from the Muromachi period show the temple's grandeur at the time, depicting 49 sub-temples in addition to the main temple. However, it was destroyed by fires and earthquakes during the Edo period, and today only the main hall, guest hall, and other buildings remain. The principal image is a wooden Seiryōji-style Shaka Nyorai statue (a national important cultural property). In addition, the temple houses many other valuable cultural properties, including statues of the Ten Great Disciples, a wooden statue of Acala (both of which are important cultural properties of Japan), esoteric Buddhist ritual implements, and ancient documents. In the inner sanctuary behind the temple, there is a stone stupa (an important cultural property of Japan) that is said to be the tomb of Ninsho.
