Battle of Goryokaku

Japanese:
Battle of Goryokaku
Also known as the Hakodate War. This was the last resistance of the former Shogunate army, led by Enomoto Takeaki, vice-president of the navy, against the Meiji government army. Enomoto envisioned a kind of republic, with former Shogunate officials who had lost their means of food and clothing relocating to Ezo (Hokkaido) and governing the area as a colony, with Enomoto as its president. In August 1868 (Keio 4), he fled Edo with 2,000 deserters from various domains aboard eight former Shogunate ships. On the way, he joined former senior councilor Itakura Katsuyo, Ogasawara Nagamichi, and former infantry commissioner Otori Keisuke in Sendai, and landed in Ezo in October. He then expelled the Hakodate governor, seized Matsumae Castle and Esashi, and took control of Ezo at the end of October. In May of the following year, the government forces, including the addition of state-of-the-art ships purchased from the United States, overwhelmed Enomoto's forces, forcing Enomoto and his men to leave Goryokaku, where they had been holed up, and surrender. This battle marked the end of the Boshin War.
