Ernst Troeltsch

Ernst Troeltsch

German theologian, philosopher, and intellectual historian. Professor at the University of Heidelberg and the University of Berlin. The consistent theme of his wide-ranging activities was how to establish a new value order in the face of the anarchy of values that accompanied the collapse of the self-evident nature of Christian ideals. Anarchy originates from historicism rather than naturalism, and the issue is history, faith, and the absoluteness of Christianity. In order to consider religion, both rigorous critical and historical procedures and ethical awareness are required. Here, instead of a naive assertion of absoluteness, a position on the validity of cultural synthesis based on the unity of Christianity and Western culture is proposed, with personal and inner determination as a prerequisite. He was also called a philosopher of historicism, and it was this cultural synthesis that overcame historicist skepticism and relativism. As a intellectual historian, he was greatly influenced by Max Weber. There is still much to learn from his sincere thinking today. His main works include "Historicism and its Problems" (1922) and "Historicism and its Overcoming" (1924).
