In ancient documents, divers are referred to as "kazukime," and diving is called kazuku in the Shima Peninsula, Tokushima Prefecture, and Izu, sumu in Oita Prefecture, and moguru in many other areas. They are generally broadly divided into funaama (also called funado or honama), who row out in a boat as a married couple, and kachido (also called dakiama), who bring a bucket or tampo (a shallow bucket-shaped float with a fishing net hung underneath) and swim or walk along the reefs on the coast to the fishing grounds. The use of weights to speed up the sinking speed and improve efficiency is a relatively recent development, and a simple example is known from Kuzaki in Shima, where a rope was passed through a hole drilled in a rock.

　古文献に潜水する海女を〈かずきめ〉と記すように，潜水作業をすることを志摩半島や徳島県や伊豆方面ではカズクといい，大分県でスム，その他ではモグルというところが多い。普通，夫婦で舟を漕ぎ出し潜るフナアマ(フナドとか本アマともいう)と，桶やタンポ(浅い桶形の浮きの下にスカリ網をつるしたもの)を持参して泳いでいったり，海岸の岩礁伝いに歩いて漁場までいくカチド(ダキアマともいう)とに大別される。　潜水沈下速度をはやめ，能率をあげるために分銅を用いるようになったのは比較的新しく，志摩の国崎（くざき）では石に穴をあけて綱を通した素朴な事例が知られている。…
