Japanese: 乳様突起炎 - にゅうようとっきえん

The mastoid process is a bony protrusion at the back of the ear (pinna), and part of the middle ear cavity (called a honeycomb due to its shape) extends inside it. When inflammation occurs in the middle ear and spreads to the mastoid process, it is more difficult to cure than simple otitis media, and the symptoms and treatment methods change, so it is called this to distinguish it from otitis media. In acute mastoiditis (or mastoiditis), ear discharge does not stop from a perforation of the eardrum after acute otitis media, and bone changes can be seen in the mastoid process on an ear X-ray.

乳様突起mastoid processは耳(耳介)の後方にある骨の突起であるが，この内側には中耳腔の一部(その形から蜂巣とよばれる)が広がっている。中耳に炎症がおこり，乳様突起の蜂巣にも炎症がおよぶと，単なる中耳炎より治りにくく，症状や治療法もかわってくるので，中耳炎と区別してこの名称がある。急性乳様突起炎(または乳突洞炎)では，急性中耳炎のあと鼓膜の穿孔（せんこう）から耳漏(耳だれ)が止まらず，耳のレントゲン写真で乳突蜂巣部に骨の変化がみられる。
