Co Loa (English spelling)

Japanese: コーロア（英語表記）Co Loa

A village in northern Vietnam, northeast of Hanoi. The entire village is covered by Co Loa Citadel, believed to have been built by King An Duong (Anyang) in the 3rd century BC. The ruins of the citadel are a three-tiered structure consisting of a circular outer citadel with a circumference of 8km, an inner citadel with a circumference of 6.5km, and a square inner citadel with a circumference of 1.6km, and each rampart is surrounded by a moat 10 to 30m wide. The outer moat coincides with the Hoang River in the southeast, and the inner citadel also leans to the southeast. It is said that King An Duong sailed around the three moats and reached the river. The amphibious castle represents the cosmological unity of mountains and water, heaven (circle) and earth (square), and is also linked to the symbolism of conch shells.

ベトナム北部，ハノイ北東の村。前3世紀のアンズオン(安陽)王がつくったとされるコーロア城が全村を覆う。城址は全周8kmの円形外城，6.5kmの間城，1.6kmの方形内城の三段構えで，各城塁の外に幅10～30mの濠が巡る。外濠は南東でホアン川と一致し，内城も南東に偏る。アンズオン王は船で三濠を回って川に出たと伝える。水陸両戦用の城は，宇宙論的に山と水，天(円)と地(四角)の統一を意味し，巻貝の象徴論等も絡む。
