...In September 1936, when Yezhov, a bureaucrat in the Central Committee of the Party, became the People's Commissar of Internal Affairs, the scale of the purge of party members expanded. Georgii L. Pyatakov (1890-1937), Radek, and others were tried, and during the Central Committee plenum in February 1937, Bukharin, Rykov, and others were arrested, and in 1938, they were sentenced to death and executed at the Third Moscow Trial. Furthermore, in June 1937, military personnel such as Tukhachevsky and Iona E. Yakir (1896-1937) were executed as German spies.
