…A deciduous shrub of the Araliaceae family that grows in subalpine coniferous forests. The trunk is upright, almost unbranched, and less than 1m tall, and is densely covered with needle-like thorns. The leaves are clustered at the end of the trunk, alternate, circular or cordate, 20-40cm in diameter, irregularly cut into palmate edges, and the lobes have sharp notched duplicative serrations. The petioles and veins on both sides of the leaves have sharp needle-like thorns. The flowers are small, yellow-green, and numerous in June-July in panicles at the ends of the stems. The five petals are oblong and about 3mm long. …
