Fake wound - Gishō

Japanese:
Fake wound - Gishō

An animal pretends to be injured to deceive its predator. This is known to occur in birds such as plovers and ducks, and in some freshwater fish, where the parents who are nursing their young are able to attract the attention of predators and protect them. In birds such as little plover, when a predator approaches the nest, the parent bird first leaves the nest, lands on the ground, flaps its wings, and struggles as if it is injured and unable to fly. In this way, it distracts the predator's attention from the chicks, and when the predator gets close to it, it suddenly flies away. It moves a little and repeats the same behavior, and when it is far enough away from the nest, it flies up and disappears. This behavior is thought to be an instinct that developed from the conflict between the urge to stay in the nest and the urge to escape.
