Jōzankidan - Jōzankidan

Essays and history books from the mid-Edo period. 25 volumes in the main text, 4 volumes in the collected works, and 1 volume of the appendix "Amayo no tomoshibi" (Lights for a Rainy Night). Written by Yuasa Jōzan. There is a preface written in 1739, so the original form is thought to have been created around that time, but it was published about 30 years after the author's death, during the Bunka and Bunsei eras (1804-1830). It is a compilation of over 700 anecdotes and words and deeds of samurai from the Sengoku period to the early Edo period, randomly selected from various books. As the author himself said, "The anecdotes included here are of great use in teaching, so I have recorded only the facts," the contents are full of extremely interesting episodes, and this, combined with the author's serious and honest writing style that reflects his personality and his clear and concise writing, attracted many readers.

江戸中期の随筆、歴史書。正編25巻、拾遺4巻、付録『雨夜灯(あまよのともしび)』1巻、30冊。湯浅(ゆあさ)常山著。元文(げんぶん)4年（1739）の自序があり、原型はそのころにできたものと思われるが、刊行は著者没後30年ほどのち、文化・文政(ぶんかぶんせい)年間（1804～30）のことであった。戦国時代から江戸時代初頭の武士の逸話や言行700余を、諸書から任意に抄出、集大成したものといってよい。著者自らが「ここに収めた逸話は大いに教訓に資する故に、事実のみを記す」というように、内容はきわめて興味深いエピソードに富み、それが著者の人柄を反映した謹厳実直な執筆態度や、平明簡潔な文章と相まって多くの読者を集めた。
