An evergreen perennial plant of the Rubiaceae family that grows in the shade of trees in mountainous areas (illustration). Its name comes from its climbing habit, resembling that of the ant-oak plant. The long, creeping stems grow to over 70 cm and send out roots from the nodes. The leaves are ovate and 1-1.5 cm long. The flowers grow on short stalks at the ends of the stems, and are tetrameric, with two or rarely three flowers. There are two types of flowers, short-style and long-style, with the former having long stamens and the latter having short stamens. The corolla is tubular funnel-shaped, white, and about 1 cm long. The lower ovary has four lobes, each containing one drooping ovule. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
