Tall tales are folklore handed down in the western and southern frontier regions of the United States. They became popular around 1820 and remained popular until the 20th century. Lumberjacks, cattlemen, and pioneers living in the frontier regions would sit around a campfire drinking and tell amusing tales of adventure and anecdotes, boasting about their own bravery. The skill of the storytelling was valued more than the veracity of the content of the story. To make it seem more real, many stories begin with "I saw it with my own eyes" or "I heard it."
