Jivaka (English spelling)

...Medicine was organized into a system of knowledge and became a specialized field of study at the time when free thought was born in India and the Upanishad philosophers, Buddha, and Mahavira were active. The legendary physician Jivaka is said to have been Buddha's personal physician, and the Buddha's teachings themselves often use medical metaphors. Many of the legendary physicians who appear in later classical medical books would also belong to this period if considered historical figures.
