Trincomalee (English spelling)

Japanese: トリンコマリー(英語表記)Trincomalee
Trincomalee (English spelling)
A port city in northeastern Sri Lanka. The capital of Trincomalee District. It is located on the northern shore of Trincomalee Bay, a branch of the Bay of Bengal. It was once a Tamil settlement, but in the 17th century the Portuguese occupied it, and in 1622 they destroyed a large Tamil temple and built Fort Frederick with its stones. It was one of the best ports in the world, and was the subject of much vying for power. It was subsequently occupied by the Dutch and French, and then by the British in 1795, and became a key point for maritime trade. During World War II, it became the largest base of the British Eastern Fleet after the fall of Singapore, and was bombed by the Japanese. It was returned to Sri Lanka in 1957. Its position as a major trading port has now been ceded to Colombo. The Mahaweli River basin in the south is an important rice-growing area. Titanium is mined in the northern coastal area. Population: 50,000 (1990 estimate).
