Color degrees of freedom

Quarks have flavor degrees of freedom (degrees of freedom of scent) that represent their type, such as u, d, s, c, etc., but each flavor degree of freedom is thought to have three further types, u (red), u (blue), and u (green). This classification of red, blue, and green is given by the color degree of freedom, which is also called the degree of color freedom. Although it is called color or flavor, it does not mean the actual scent or color, but is merely a convenient term for classifying types. Color degrees of freedom were historically introduced in relation to the statistics of quarks.

クォークにはu,d,s,c，……などその種類を表すフレーバー自由度(香りの自由度)があるが，それぞれのフレーバー自由度をもったクォークはさらにu(赤)，u(青)，u(緑)というように3種類あると考えられている。この赤，青，緑の分類を与えるのがカラー自由度で，色の自由度とも呼ばれる。カラーとかフレーバーといっても実際の香りや色ということではなく，あくまで種類分けをするための便宜上の用語である。カラー自由度は歴史的にはクォークの統計性に関連して導入された。
