…After the death of Queen Anne, who was known as a Tory, he was forced to refrain from superficial political activities. However, with the publication of Robinson Crusoe in 1719, he found a new field of activity, the novel. Over the next five years, he published Captain Singleton (1720), Moll Flanders, A Note on the Plague Year, Colonel Jack (all 1722), and Roxana (1724). Most of these are factual records of the life stories of their protagonists, and because of their realistic style, they are considered to be the first modern English novels. …
