Lake Haruna - Harunako

Located in Harunako-cho, Takasaki City, Gunma Prefecture, this lake is a crater lake of Mt. Haruna. It has an area of ​​1.19 square kilometers, an elevation of 1,084 meters above sea level, a curved shape of 0.8 kilometers east to west, 1.5 kilometers north to south, and a circumference of 4.8 kilometers. It becomes deeper with a steep slope from the shore, and the bottom is flat, with a maximum depth of 12.5 meters. The bottom of the lake is rich in diatom mud. The transparency varies from time to time, but is 3.6 to 9.5 meters, and it is a eutrophic type. The lake water carves a crater rapids in the northeast corner, becomes Numao River, and flows down to Agatsuma River. On the southwest side, a tunnel built in 1904 (Meiji 37) is used for irrigation of the southern slope. The reflection of Haruna Fuji on the lake surface is beautiful. The area around the lake is designated as the Prefectural Haruna Park, and the lakeshore is home to tourist settlements that have boomed since the end of World War II. In summer, people come to camp or go to highland schools, and in winter, when the entire lake freezes over, people come to ice skate or ice fish for smelt. Buses run from Ikaho and Takasaki.

群馬県高崎市榛名湖町にあり、榛名山の火口原湖。面積1.19平方キロメートル、湖面の標高1084メートル、東西0.8キロメートル、南北1.5キロメートルの曲玉(まがたま)状で周囲4.8キロメートル。湖岸から急傾斜で深くなり、湖底は平坦(へいたん)で、最深部は水深12.5メートル。湖底には珪藻骸泥(けいそうがいでい)が多い。透明度はときによって違うが3.6～9.5メートルで、富栄養型をなす。湖水は北東隅に火口瀬を刻み沼尾(ぬまお)川となって吾妻(あがつま)川に流れ下る。南西側では1904年（明治37）につくったトンネルによって南斜面の灌漑(かんがい)用水に利用されている。湖面に榛名富士の映った姿は美しい。湖の周囲は県立榛名公園に指定され、湖岸には第二次世界大戦後急増した観光集落があり、夏はキャンプや高原学校、冬は全湖面が結氷しスケートやワカサギの穴釣りに訪れる人が多い。伊香保(いかほ)、高崎からバスが通じる。
