Bird-attaching group

Japanese: 鳥付群 - とりつきぐん

A school of fish that seabirds follow. It is also called a "torizuki," "dai-na-mura," or "takari." This is often said of skipjack tuna, but the same phenomenon is seen with tuna, mackerel, and sardines. In the case of sardines, the fish directly become food for seabirds, but in the case of skipjack tuna, tuna, and mackerel, they follow schools of prey such as sardines because they get a share of the food when they chase them. Common seabirds that can be seen include seagulls, terns, shearwaters, blackbirds, boobies, and albatrosses.

海鳥がつき従っている魚群。〈とりづき〉〈だいなむら〉〈たかり〉などともいう。カツオについていうことが多いが，マグロ，サバ，イワシなどにも同様の現象が見られる。イワシの場合はこれが直接，海鳥の餌となるが，カツオ，マグロ，サバの場合は，これらがイワシ類などの餌の群れを追う際，おこぼれにあずかれるので追随しているものである。よく見られる海鳥はカモメ，アジサシ，ミズナギドリ，クロコドリ，カツオドリ，アホウドリなどである。
