Mizuko Daioji Shell Mound - Mizuko Daioji Shell Mound
An archaeological site from the early Jomon period in front of Daioji Temple in Mizuko Teramae, Fujimi City, Saitama Prefecture. It is also called Mizuko Shell Mound. It is located about 38 km upstream from the mouth of the Arakawa River, on the right bank of the Shingashi River, on the northeastern edge of the Musashino Plateau overlooking the lowlands of the Arakawa River, at an altitude of about 19 m. The shell mound consists of a group of 67 small shell mounds scattered in a circular shape over an area of about 160 m in diameter. All of them are mainly light shell mounds containing mainly Yamato Corbicula corbicula with some marine shellfish, and have long been a focus of shell mound research. Excavations have been carried out twice, in 1937 and 1967, and in both cases the remains of a pit dwelling were found beneath the shell layer. The results of these two excavations and subsequent drilling surveys have revealed that this shell mound was a large circular settlement that existed over several periods during the early Jomon period.
