Fumio Hayasaka

Composer. Born in Sendai. Moved to Sapporo at a young age and taught himself composition and piano. Graduated from Hokkai Middle School in 1932 (Showa 7). In 1934, formed the New Music Federation with Akira Ifukube and others. He had an early interest in traditional Japanese and Oriental arts, and left the central music scene, which was oriented toward the West at the time, to develop his own style of composition based on the idea of "Pan-Asianism." His major works include the orchestral pieces "Ancient Dances" (1937) and "Dances to the Left and Dances to the Right" (1942), which are based on gagaku, as well as the symphonic suite "Yukar" (1955), which he completed after his death. He was also active in the field of film music, leaving behind many masterpieces such as Akira Kurosawa's "Rashomon" and "Seven Samurai," and Kenji Mizoguchi's "Ugetsu Monogatari" and "Sansho Dayu." His musical philosophy of "Pan-Orientalism" had a major influence on a new generation of composers such as Toru Takemitsu.
