A general term for mosses that grow on living leaves of ferns and evergreen trees. Some foliar mosses are known to have rhizoids that penetrate the leaf tissue and absorb water and nutrients, but generally they are simply attached to the leaf surface and there is no nutritional connection between the two. They develop in warm and humid regions and have differentiated into many different species in the tropics, but are also quite common in lowland valleys in southern Japan. There are few mosses or hornworts among foliar mosses, and most are liverworts, especially in the genera Cololejeunea and Leptolejeunea of the Cerataceae family and the genus Radula of the Cerataceae family.
