Hybrid Perpetual Rose was a natural hybrid of the Chinese rose and the Damask rose, called Hybrid China, a cross between the Chinese rose and Rosa Gallica, and the Bourbon Rose, a natural hybrid of the Chinese rose and the Damask rose. The characteristics of the Hybrid Perpetual Rose were large and profuse, which was rare until then, and the plant was robust and resistant to cold and disease. After the first bloom in spring, the species also bloomed again, so it was named perpetual, but in reality it is not a true perpetual flower that continues to bloom until autumn. …

…なかでもハイブリッド･パーペチュアル･ローズHybrid Perpetual Roseとティー･ローズTea Roseの系統が，19世紀後期から作り出され，最も重要な園芸バラの系統となった。ハイブリッド･パーペチュアル･ローズは，ハイブリッド･チャイナHybrid Chinaと呼ばれた四季咲性のコウシンバラ系とダマスクバラの自然交雑種や，コウシンバラ系とローザ･ガリカの交雑種，あるいはコウシンバラ系とダマスクバラの自然交雑によってできたブルボン･ローズBourbon Roseなど，さまざまな雑種起源系統がさらに育成された。性質はそれまで少なかった大輪咲きの多花性で，木は強健で，耐寒性や耐病性にすぐれ，春の一番咲きのあと，返り咲きもする品種が出たので，perpetual(四季咲性)と名付けられたが，実際は秋まで咲き続ける真の四季咲きではない。…
