Genko's Commentary - Genkoshakusho

A history of Japanese Buddhism written in the late Kamakura period by Kokan Shiren. It has 30 volumes. It was the first comprehensive monk biography in Japan, and the first history book in the annals style. It consists of three parts: den (monk biographies), biyo (zizi biyo = chronology), and zhi (Buddhist cultural journals). The monk biographies up to volume 19 are divided into 10 categories, following the example of Chinese biographies of great monks. In 1307 (Tokuji 2), Issan Ichinei pointed out his ignorance of Japanese Buddhism, and Kokan completed the work in 1307 (Genko 2). After Kokan's death, the Nyuzo (incorporation of the Tripitaka) was permitted by imperial sanction, and it took 14 years to publish, starting in 1364 (Shohei 19, Joji 3). Commentaries include "Wage," "Benmo," and "Bisou."

鎌倉末期に成立した日本仏教史書。虎関師錬(こかんしれん)著。30巻。総合的僧伝としては日本最初のもので、紀伝体の歴史書としても最初のものである。内容は、伝（僧伝）、表（資治表＝年表）、志（仏教文化誌）の3部分からなり、巻19までの僧伝は、中国の高僧伝に倣って10科に分類する。1307年（徳治2）一山一寧(いっさんいちねい)に日本仏教についての無知を指摘されて発憤し、22年（元亨2）に完成した。虎関の寂後、入蔵(にゅうぞう)（大蔵経編入）が勅許され、64年（正平19・貞治3）より14年を費やし刊行された。注釈書に『和解(わげ)』『便蒙(べんもう)』『微考』などがある。
