Sasayama Basin

A basin in the Tamba region in eastern Hyogo Prefecture. It is a structural basin stretching 16 km east to west and 4 km north to south, with the southern part being the Sasayama River basin, a tributary of the Kakogawa River. The bottom of the basin consists of two or three terraces and alluvial plains, with many small hills scattered throughout. It is an area where Mesozoic lake sediments were uplifted and eroded away. Development began during the Jomon period. The central-western part of the basin has many wet rice fields and is the largest early-season rice region in the prefecture, with other specialty crops including Chinese yam and chestnuts.

兵庫県東部、丹波(たんば)地方にある盆地。東西16キロメートル、南北4キロメートルの構造盆地で、南部は加古川支流の篠山川流域である。盆地底は2、3段の段丘と沖積地からなり、多くの小丘が点在する。中生代の湖水堆積物(たいせきぶつ)が隆起し削り残された所である。開発は縄文時代に始まる。盆地中西部は湿田多く県下最大の早場米地帯で、ほかにヤマノイモ、クリなどを特産する。
