A bird of the crane family. Wingspan: 65cm. One of the largest species of Japanese birds. The body is white, the top of the head is red, and the neck and some of the flight feathers are black. It breeds in southeastern Siberia and northern northeastern China, and migrates to China and the Korean Peninsula in winter. In Japan, about 600 birds live year-round as resident birds, mainly in the Kushiro marshland in Hokkaido. It is a special natural monument with no designated area. In the early breeding season, they jump and fly up, performing the so-called crane dance. They build nests on the ground in the marshland by piling up dead reeds and lay one or two eggs. In addition, one or two birds occasionally come to the crane migration site in Izumi City, Kagoshima Prefecture, among other cranes. Endangered species, Class II (Ministry of the Environment, 4th Red List). →Related topicsKiritappu Marshland|Tsurui Village|Tsurui Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
