Born March 13, 1864 in Torzug near Tverai [Died] March 15, 1941. A Russian-born painter who was active in Wiesbaden, Germany. In 1888 he gave up his position in the Russian Imperial Guard to study under I. Repin. In 1896 he moved to Munich, where he met the expressionist painter Kandinsky, who influenced him for the rest of his life. In 1905 he went to France, where he collaborated with Matisse and others. On returning to Munich he joined the New Artists Union, but after leaving it he joined the "Blue Riders." In 1917 he showed a tendency towards mysticism, and in 1924 he joined the group "The Blue Four." His major works include "Quiet Life with a Lamp" (1908) and "Night Faces" (23).
