Born March 13, 1864 in Torzug near Tverai
[Died] March 15, 1941. A Russian-born painter who was active in Wiesbaden, Germany. In 1888 he gave up his position in the Russian Imperial Guard to study under I. Repin. In 1896 he moved to Munich, where he met the expressionist painter Kandinsky, who influenced him for the rest of his life. In 1905 he went to France, where he collaborated with Matisse and others. On returning to Munich he joined the New Artists Union, but after leaving it he joined the "Blue Riders." In 1917 he showed a tendency towards mysticism, and in 1924 he joined the group "The Blue Four." His major works include "Quiet Life with a Lamp" (1908) and "Night Faces" (23).

ドイツで活躍したロシア生れの画家。 1888年ロシア帝室近衛兵の地位を捨てて I.レーピンに学ぶ。 96年ミュンヘンに移り，表現主義の画家カンディンスキーに出会って終生その影響を受ける。 1905年フランスに行き，マチスらと共同制作を行う。ミュンヘンに帰って新芸術家同盟に所属，脱退してのち「青騎士」に属する。 17年には神秘主義の傾向を示す。 24年「青の4人」のグループに加わる。主要作品『ランプのある静かな生活』 (1908) ，『夜の表情』 (23) 。
