A genus of the Commelinaceae family, with about 60 species distributed from the temperate regions of North America to tropical America. Tradescantia repens is well known as a species used for its ornamental flowers, but in horticulture, species used as foliage plants are called Tradescantia. Most are creeping perennials with succulent stems and leaves. The leaves are oblong or lanceolate, alternate. Flowers are borne in the axils or at the apex of the stem, and have three petals and three sepals. Tradescantia albiflora T.albiflora has light green leaves and white flowers. The horticultural variety 'White Commelinus' has white vertical stripes. Other cultivars include the slightly smaller Tradescantia fluminensis ( T. fluminensis) and Tradescantia blossfeldiana (T. blossfeldiana ), which has purple undersides of leaves and pink-pink flowers with white bases, both of which have variegated varieties. They are often grown in hanging pots and are sometimes used as ground cover in greenhouses. They like full sun. If the plant becomes untidy, trim it to keep it in shape. If watered sparingly, it will survive winter at temperatures above 3°C. They can be easily propagated by cuttings at high temperatures.

ツユクサ科の1属で，北アメリカの温帯地域から熱帯アメリカまで約 60種が分布。花を観賞する種ではムラサキツユクサがよく知られるが，園芸的には，観葉植物として利用されるものがトラデスカンティアの名で呼ばれている。多くは匍匐性の多年草で，多汁質の茎葉をもつ。葉は長楕円形または披針形で，互生。花は葉腋あるいは茎頂につき，花弁，萼片 (がくへん) ともに3枚ある。トラデスカンティア・アルビフローラ T.albifloraは明るい緑色の葉をもち，花は白色。園芸品種の`シラフツユクサ'は白い縦縞の斑 (ふ) が入る。ほかにやや小型のトラデスカンティア・フルミネンシス T.fluminensisや，葉の裏面が紫色で，花が桃紅色で基部が白いトラデスカンティア・ブロッスフェルディアーナ T.blossfeldianaなどが栽培され，いずれも斑入り品種がある。吊り鉢仕立てにされることが多く，温室内でグラウンドカバーのように用いられることもある。日光を好む。草姿が乱れたら刈込んで整える。冬は水やりを控え目にすれば3℃以上で越冬する。高温時の挿木で容易にふやすことができる。
