Engineering Plastics

As an industrial material, it refers to a thermoplastic resin that can be used at temperatures above 100°C and below 0°C, and is often abbreviated as engineering plastics. General-purpose plastics such as polyethylene, styrene, and poly(vinyl chloride) lose their mechanical properties at temperatures above 100°C and cannot be used as industrial materials. Engineering plastics are polymeric materials that have the mechanical properties, heat resistance, and durability of traditional wood, metal, and inorganic materials, and can be used in parts that require a certain degree of strength to be maintained, such as machine parts, electrical parts, and housing materials. Polyacetal, polyamide, and polycarbonate are the three main general-purpose engineering plastics. Materials that have particularly excellent heat resistance are called super engineering plastics, and poly(phenylene sulfide) resin (PPS resin) is one example.

工業用材料として，100 ℃ 以上，0 ℃ 以下の温度で使用できる熱可塑性樹脂をいい，エンプラと略語でよぶことが多い．汎用プラスチックであるポリエチレン，スチレン，ポリ(塩化ビニル)などは，100 ℃ 以上の温度になると機械的特性が失われ，工業材料として使用できない．従来の木材，金属，無機材料のような力学的性質と，耐熱性，耐久性をもち，機械部品を中心に電気部品，住宅用材などである程度の強度維持が必要な部分に使用できる高分子材料のことをエンプラといい，ポリアセタール，ポリアミド，ポリカーボネートを三大汎用エンプラとよぶ．とくに耐熱性にすぐれた材料をスパーエンジニアリングプラスチックといい，ポリ(フェニレンスルフィド)樹脂(PPS樹脂)はその一つである．
