Located in the southwest of Finland at the mouth of the Gulf of Bothnia, this archipelago consists of a main island of the same name and about 6,500 smaller islands. Its Swedish name is Åland. Approximately 150 are inhabited. Mariehavn, a port in the south of the main island, is an important location for fishing and maritime traffic. It has long been a disputed area between Russia and Sweden, and became part of Russia in 1809. It has been part of Finland since 1921. Most of the inhabitants are of Swedish descent.
