Antal Dorati

Antal Dorati

An American conductor of Hungarian origin. He studied under Bartók and Kodály at the Budapest Conservatory in his hometown, and made his debut as a conductor at the Budapest Opera House in 1924. After a successful career as an opera and ballet conductor in various parts of Europe, he moved to the United States, where he served as the principal conductor of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra after World War II, and then the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra from 1949. He left his American post for a while to work in England and Sweden from 1963, but returned to the American music world in 1969 as music director of the Washington National Symphony Orchestra, and then became music director of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra (1979-1981). Although he had a wide repertoire, Doráti's recording of all of Haydn's symphonies is his greatest achievement. He first came to Japan with the London Symphony Orchestra in 1963 (Showa 38).
