A theory about space as a place for human existence. Along with thoughts about time, thoughts about space are as old as the birth of civilization, and have since developed in a variety of ways depending on the era and perspective. Space has been developed in a variety of forms, from mythological spatial images that include the underworld and the heavens, to various theories of geometry that present a variety of spatial models, from three-dimensional Euclidean space to topological space, to the spatial theories of physics from ancient to modern times that range from absolute space to the space-time continuum, and even to structural analyses of space in the human life world, art, and the environmental world.

人間の生存の場としての空間に関する理論。空間についての思索は，時間についての思索と並んで，文明の発生とともに古く，以後，時代や観点に応じて多彩な展開をみせる。すなわち，冥界から天界までを含む神話的空間像から，3次元ユークリッド空間やトポロジー空間までの多様な空間モデルを提示するさまざまな幾何学の空間論，絶対空間から時空連続体の場にまで及ぶ古今の物理学の空間論，さらにはまた，人間の生活世界，芸術，環境世界などの空間の構造分析にいたるさまざまなかたちをとって展開される。
