A city in the Republic of Serbia, in central Yugoslavia. It lies on the Lepenica River and has a population of 147,000 (1991). It was founded in the 15th century. It flourished as the capital of the Principality of Serbia from 1818 to 1839, during which time Serbia's first gymnasium, printing press, theater, lycei (lice), and military academy were established. In 1851, a munitions factory also began production. Since then, it has served as the economic and cultural center of the Šumadia region to this day. Between October 21 and 23, 1941, the occupying German army shot and killed 7,000 people, including schoolchildren, in retaliation for the assassination of a local officer. ユーゴスラビア中部,セルビア共和国の都市。レペニツァ河畔にあり,人口14万7000(1991)。15世紀に建設された。1818‐39年までセルビア公国の首都として栄え,その間セルビア初のギムナジウム,印刷所,劇場,リツェイ(リセ),士官学校がつくられた。51年には軍需工場も生産を始めた。以後シュマディア地方の経済・文化の中心地として今日にいたる。1941年10月21~23日,占領中のドイツ軍は当地の将校暗殺の報復に学童など7000人を銃殺した。
