This refers to the process of superposing two light waves with frequencies f1 and f2 in an appropriate manner to create a light wave with frequency n1f1 ± n2f2 ( n1 and n2 are positive integers ) . This phenomenon is easily observed and utilized with ordinary waves and long-wavelength radio waves. In the case of light, it is very monochromatic, and can be observed by shining high-energy-density laser light on a nonlinear crystal.
