Japanese: 大牟田[市] - おおむた

Facing the Ariake Sea at the southern tip of Fukuoka Prefecture. Established as a city in 1917. A coal and heavy chemical industrial city with Miike at its center, it is the birthplace of the coal industry. It grew rapidly after the development of the Miike coalfields in the early Meiji period. Coal-related industries were established in 1889 by Mitsui capital, and a chemical complex was already built in the early Showa period. Even after the energy revolution, the main industry has remained chemical industry, but in recent years the city has been building technoparks to attract companies. The city is served by the Kyushu Shinkansen, Kagoshima Main Line, and Nishitetsu Tenjin-Omuta Line, and the city center is connected to Arao City in Kumamoto Prefecture. Nori seaweed is also cultivated in the Ariake Sea. There is the theme park Navel Land, and Enmei Park, famous for its cherry blossoms. It has an area of 81.45 ^km2 and a population of 123,638 (2010).

福岡県南端の有明海に面する市。1917年市制。三池を中心とする石炭・重化学工業都市で，石炭産業発祥の地。明治初期の三池炭田開発後急激に発展，1889年以降三井資本による石炭関連工業が立地して昭和初期すでに化学コンビナートが建設された。エネルギー革命以後も主力産業は一貫して化学工業であるが，近年はテクノパークの建設を進め企業誘致を行っている。九州新幹線，鹿児島本線，西鉄天神大牟田線が通じ，市街地は熊本県荒尾市に連続している。有明海でのノリ養殖も行われる。テーマパークのネイブルランド，桜の名所の延命公園がある。81.45km²。12万3638人（2010）。
