A pathological fear of small spaces with no closed exits (such as inside a train or airplane). The Western word is a compound of the Latin claustrum, meaning "bolt," and the Greek phobos, meaning "fear." People with this fear may avoid express trains and take local trains, or sit near the exit at the theater. Claustrophobia, along with agoraphobia, which is also a situational phobia, is considered a symptom of neurosis. [Shimosaka Kozo] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
