Ancient Greek god of marriage. Also called Hymenaios. At weddings, there was a custom of singing a wedding song with the refrain "Hymen Hymenai-oh" or "Hymen Hymenae", and this refrain was eventually interpreted as an appeal to a god, leading to the idea that Hymen or Hymenaeus was the god in charge of marriage. In artworks, Hymen is often depicted as a young man with a flower crown on his head and a torch in his hand. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
