Generally, it refers to clay products that depict human faces or similar features, but not many examples have been excavated. They can be broadly divided into two types. One type belongs to the middle to late Jomon period, and is made with hollowed-out eyes and mouths, and raised clay for noses and eyebrows. It is quite realistic. There are holes in the ears that are thought to be for attaching strings. These may have actually been used as masks. A set of clay products in the shape of ears, noses, and mouths excavated from a late pit at the Hatten ruins in Iwate Prefecture is thought to be part of a mask, and the main body may have been made of wood. The other type belongs to the late period, is circular, and measures 10 to 15 centimeters in diameter. The facial expression is similar to that of clay figurines. It is difficult to imagine that they were practical to use as masks. [Isamu Okamoto] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
