Brace (English spelling)

Brace (English spelling)
A general term for reinforcing materials placed on the diagonals of buildings and other structures when the main straight members are assembled into a quadrilateral. Dividing the quadrilateral into triangular units prevents the frame from deforming and withstands horizontal forces acting on its faces. They are primarily used to reinforce bearing walls, which consist of building columns, foundations, beams, etc., to resist wind and earthquake forces. Horizontal braces may also be placed between the rafters and beams of floor trusses or roof trusses to widely transmit external forces to partition frames, including bearing walls. Depending on the direction of the horizontal force, compressive or tensile forces act on braces, so thick braces of the same size as the adjacent column or at least three times larger are used to withstand compressive forces, while thinner thin braces, reinforcing bars, and steel braces made of flat or shaped steel are often used to withstand tensile forces.
